Strategies for Teacher Advancement & Renewal
What is STAR?
A program to recognize and reward outstanding veteran SC teachers. It is sponsored by the Foundation for Professional Development and PSTA.
Who is eligible? Teachers who have taught for at least 5 years in South Carolina’s public schools and have direct contact with students are eligible to apply. STAR attendees are selected through a rigorous application process.
What are the goals? Our goals are to retain quality teachers, enhance the profession, and improve opportunities for students. The STAR seminar rewards outstanding teachers and recognizes them for exceptional performance while providing opportunities to form long-lasting networks with other educators. Teachers leave the seminar with renewed enthusiasm, leading to improved student performance and relationships with parents and students.
How is the program funded? Our seminars are funded through grants and private contributions. Palmetto State Teachers Association and The Foundation for Professional Development pay all expenses (accommodations, travel, and substitute pay) for the week-long seminar held at the St. Christopher Conference Center on Seabrook Island.
Are you a former STAR Teacher? STAR-alumni may order a STAR plaque to place outside his/her classroom to identify his Star-ship. These brass-colored plaques are available for $15.00 (includes tax and shipping). To order your plaque, please email firstname.lastname@example.org including your name and mailing address.
The STAR program is the only one of its kind in South Carolina!
